Star Wars (1977)

Overall:
Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is a farm-boy who wants to break free of the monotony of life on Tatooine. Having lived under the care and tutelage of his Uncle Owen (Phil Brown) and Aunt Beru (Shelagh Fraser), Luke feels that he is meant for grander things than moisture farming. Uncle Owen, however, haunted by images of the past, refuses to let Luke go off, always finding excuses to keep him on-planet and away from the influences of the Galaxy.
One fateful day finds Uncle Owen in possession of two droids, C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), who, unbeknownst to Owen, are currently being sought after by the Evil Empire's greatest enforcer, Darth Vader (David Prowse, James Earl Jones). It seems the two droids hold a secret that could very well enable the Rebellion to strike a key blow to the Empire.
When little Artoo runs off in search of the mystical person by the name of Obi-Wan Kenobi (the amazingly talented Alec Guinness), Threepio and Luke rush to find him before he gets into trouble. When Luke finds out that Obi-Wan is actually the old hermit Ben Kenobi, and that the Empire has destroyed all that he has known and loved, he gets his chance to leave the dusty plains of Tatooine behind and embark on a journey that will change his life.

*snorts* I'm not even going to bother. Really folks, I don't think you want me to wax poetic on this trilogy anymore. I'll just drive you up the wall with my gushing.
Suffice to say that the special effects are superbly done, the story is awesome and has stood the test of time and you really can't ask for a better action-adventure movie to keep you company on a rainy day.
Dislikes:
What could I possibly find wrong with these movies, you ask? I have some issues with the 1997 re-released versions (which, incidentally are the versions found on the DVDs, with a little more added). Most of the added scenes are okay, but I - as well as many other die-hard fans - think the idea of Greedo shooting first is something of a sacrilege.
For more on my dislikes, please see the respective reviews for the next chapters.
In Closing:
While I tout the phrase Vive L'Originales to some great and vast extent, I can take or leave the re-release of Star Wars (A New Hope). I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the original 1977 version of the film, as it is the one I grew up with, and it is the one that I recommend people go out and rent.
If you've never seen Star Wars, please do. Dust off those VCR's, run out to Blockbuster and check this one out. You won't be disappointed.
